Big City Lights to Safari Sights: City and Safari Tours in Africa

Want to go on safari but also love shopping up a storm, dining out, and dancing the night away in glitzy clubs? Our continent offers a delicious and convenient menu of city and safari tours that will suit all palates. Plus, we’ve sampled them all ourselves, cherry-picking our favourite pairings to share with you…

Cape Town and Kruger National Park

From city to safari in two ticks

From Concrete Jungle to King of the Jungle

Many of our guests are surprised that they can enjoy city and safari in one go while visiting Africa. Whilst most people think of safaris when they think of our home continent and rightly so, its cities should not be overlooked. Here are our favourite combinations of city and safari to whet your travel appetite.

Combo 1: Cape Town and Garden Route, South Africa

This duo is a delightful mix of scenery, safari and experiences that will leave you wanting more.

South Africa’s Mother City

Cape Town is South Africa‘s oldest city, affectionately known as The Mother City, and lauded worldwide for its diversity. It also happens to be where our Rhino Africa HQ is!

Think of Cape Town, and you’re likely picturing the iconic flat-topped Table Mountain. But wrapped around this impressive mountain is a lively city with inviting sights, sounds, smells, and smiles that will steal your heart. In fact, it frequently does, with people from across the country and world packing up their lives to move to the city once they’ve had their first taste.

South Africa’s Garden of Eden

The Garden Route‘s name says it all. It’s lush, flourishing, and appetising, with landscapes offering plenty of adventure. You can easily combine Big 5 safaris at the many game reserves with your stay in Cape Town.

Whether you decide to fly to George Airport and drive from there or take the road trip along this stunning route, you won’t regret spending as much time as possible in this neck of the woods. Plus, it’s malaria-free, so you can travel with the whole family, no matter how young or old they are.

Combine South Africa’s largest city and most prominent safari destination, and you have a delightful concoction.

The City of Gold

The city that never sleeps, the city of gold, Jozi…it goes by many names, but one thing’s for sure – there’s nothing underwhelming about this city. It’s big, it’s bold, and it packs a punch 9a.

Whether you’re travelling for work, play, or a little bit of both, Johannesburg is the epicentre of business and entertainment. It’s also a retail therapy mecca, with large-scale, high-end shops and all the glamour your heart could desire.

Why We Love it

  • A very modern city with plenty of excellent shopping centres, in particular in the affluent neighbourhood of Sandton

The Safari Mecca

Blending seamlessly with Joburg for your holiday, the nearby Kruger National Park is the king of all Big 5 game reserves in the country. Its vast bush attracts travellers from around the world to go on game drives and see how many famous wildlife stars they can spot.

One of these includes the elusive leopard, a big cat that’s usually rare to see in the wild, but in the luxury private game reserves like Sabi Sand, you’re almost guaranteed to see not just one but a few! The accommodation options here are also top-tier, such as the World’s Leading Luxury Lodge, Silvan Safari.

Combo 3: Nairobi and Maasai Mara, Kenya

Mix one of Africa’s most prominent nature reserves with Kenya’s colourful capital, and you’ve got a recipe for the perfect East African holiday.

Gateway to Kenya

Kenya’s capital and transport hub, Nairobi, is a must-visit if you’re looking for city and safari tours in Africa, with the added bonus of a picturesque setting and plenty of culture too.

In fact, it’s here that author Karen Blixen wrote her famous memoir “Out of Africa”, which was later made into a film. You’ll recognise some of the settings from the scenes if you’re familiar with the film. Not only is it a great shopping and entertainment city, but the closest national park is a mere 7km away!

Setting of The Great Migration

Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve is the classic East African safari image often depicted on postcards. With vast savannah as far as the eye can see, peppered with flat-topped acacia trees, and sunsets that paint everything in a magical red-orange glow, it’s one of our favourite safari destinations.

It’s also host to part of the Great Migration, when over two million wildebeest followed by zebra and gazelle journey through Kenya and Tanzania in search of greener pastures.

Why We Love it

Combo 4: Pretoria and Madikwe, South Africa

Another urban and wildlife medley, the malaria-free Madikwe Game Reserve and suburban city of Pretoria, is perfect for more low-key city and safari tours.

Laid-back City Life

Pretoria is Johannesburg’s sister city, but they have their own unique charms. Whereas Joburg is all about big city lights and action, Pretoria takes a quieter approach.

We love the jacaranda-lined streets flourishing with purple blossoms in spring, giving it a softer appearance than the Joburg concrete jungle.

Magical Malaria-Free Madikwe

Madikwe Game Reserve is a conservation success story. It started as a low-yielding cattle farm, but today it boasts healthy wildlife populations, including the Big 5, giraffe, cheetah, hyena, antelope, the endangered African wild dog, and more.

Because it’s a private reserve, you can venture off-road to get up close to the wildlife and go on night drives and bush walks. We love Madikwe because it’s so family-friendly, making it ideal for a holiday with your little ones.

Boots to Barefoot: Jungle and Ocean Safaris in Africa

Are you dreaming of jungle and ocean safaris? Ready to channel your inner Tarzan or Jane and go gorilla trekking through the wild rainforests? Or do you want to dive into warm waves to explore the kaleidoscopic, mysterious underwater world? Well, why choose when in Africa, you can have both! We share our personal favourite jungle and ocean safaris hand-picked by our Travel Experts.

Zanzibar is one of our favourite African beach destinations

An Unusual But Winning Match

Some of life’s greatest matches are unlikely pairs, like peanut butter and jelly, bacon and banana, and jungle and ocean safaris. And in East Africa, you can easily combine the two.

From gorilla trekking in Rwanda, followed by swimming in predator-free Lake Kivu found in the same country, to Uganda and the Republic of Congo primate trekking before jumping over to Tanzania‘s shores to visit Zanzibar, a chain of islands in the warm Indian Ocean, your jungle and ocean safari awaits!

It’s a Jungle out There – The Best Kind

Imagine trekking up steep emerald forested hills, smelling the wet soil, hearing a symphony of bird songs, watching butterfly wings flapping overhead, and anticipation building in you of what will await when you break through the bushes. This is Africa, where any wild thing could greet you…Here are the best places for trekking through rainforests that will easily combine with beachside relaxation.

Gorilla Trekking in East Africa

Gorilla trekking in East Africa is one of our favourite things to do on our continent – no, scrap that – in the world! It’s a truly exclusive experience few are ever privy to enjoy. There are only a handful of places to still see the mountain gorilla in its natural habitat, all of which are found in East Africa.

With only around 900 of these animals left on Earth, it’s also very important that we protect the species. And you get to contribute to that when you go gorilla trekking as you’ll have to buy a permit, with those proceeds directly going to safeguarding these remarkable primates.

Dense rainforest in Rwanda

The dense rainforest gorillas in Rwanda call home

Remarkable Rwanda

Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park is one of our top destinations to recommend to our guests if they want a gorilla trekking adventure. It offers the most accessible trekking opportunities, plus you can combine it with a lakeside stay…more on that later.

It’s also famous for being where Dian Fossey studied the endangered mountain gorilla and their human-like behaviour for 20 years. Later, this is also where “Gorillas in the Mist” was filmed. And still today, many celebrities flock to this unique slice of Africa to admire the primates, including Ellen DeGeneres, whose wife, Portia de Rossi, opened the Ellen DeGeneres Campus in Rwanda as a birthday gift for Ellen, which works to further protect the primates.

There are so many luxury lodges to choose from, and many of them offer incredible wellness experiences as a cherry on top of an already unbelievable holiday.

Utopian Uganda

Nicknamed the “Pearl of Africa”, Uganda is not as popular as Rwanda yet, but one of our favourite best-kept secrets. The country shelters half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, allowing you to meet them and chimpanzees face to face.

Plus, you can see other remarkable creatures here, like elephants, unique tree-climbing lions, over 350 bird species, bushbuck, African golden cats, giant forest hogs, and more.

There’s also a lot of sightseeing and activities you can enjoy, from game drives to white water rafting.

Captivating Republic of Congo

The Republic of Congo is lesser known among international tourists when compared to Rwanda and Uganda However, it’s got so much to offer! Firstly, you can see the critically endangered western lowland gorilla here. It’s also home to the second-largest rainforest in the world after the Amazon!

You can go gorilla trekking in the Odzala-Kokoua National Park, a recognised UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve. Here, you can see Central Africa’s biggest elephant population, over 400 bird species, forest buffalo, chimpanzees, and mangabey. In fact, there are more than 16 primate species living here! The plant life is also remarkable, with an impressive 4,400 plant species growing in the park.

For your dose of culture, visit the capital city, Brazzaville. Set on the banks of the Congo River, it has a laid-back yet vibrant atmosphere with plenty of architecture, markets, and more to peruse.

From Trekking to Tanning in East Africa

As much as we love adventure, we also like to relax. It’s your holiday, after all! Well, in many of East Africa’s top destinations, it’s easy for us to tailor-make a tour that combines a gorilla trekking experience in the jungle with a tranquil lake- or beachside breakaway.

Lake Kivu, Rwanda

Rwanda‘s biggest lake, and sixth largest globally, Lake Kivu, is unexpectedly located in this jungle destination. With sandy shores and waters that are safe to swim in – free from crocodiles and hippos – it’s the perfect destination for some downtime after your gorilla trekking experience.

The lakeside town of Rubavu is super close to Volcanoes National Park, only about an hour’s drive, so you don’t need to sacrifice more time to travel. You can expect a vibey atmosphere with many hotels, bars, and more to explore.

You can go kayaking on the river, hiking or mountain biking in the area, or simply lounge in the sun while sipping on a cocktail (or two!).

Zanzibar, Tanzania

Ah, Zanzibar. A chain of islands famous for its seaside resorts and ancient architecture, we love the combination of culture and slow-living island life it offers. Fun fact, Freddy Mercury was born here in the capital Stone Town.

It baffles many of our guests when they find out that this paradise exists in East Africa. Plus, personally, we think it offers a better experience than the Mediterranean! Especially, if you love a quieter cultural beach escape. Picture swathes of talcum sand lapped by the warm Indian Ocean, with traditional dhow sailboats floating serenely in the distance. The culture is also a fascinating mix of Arab and Swahili influences.

It’s the perfect add-on to your gorilla trekking experience. And while you’re at it, why not add a Great Migration safari (seasonal) in Tanzania‘s Serengeti National Park?

Lamu Island, Kenya

A culturally and historically rich part of Kenya, Lamu Island is also home to incredible beach-front accommodation, offering barefoot luxury in combination with your East Africa gorilla trekking and safari adventure.

We recommend you add a stop-over in Maasai Mara National Reserve for a Great Migration safari (seasonal) while you’re here as well.

Whether you’re learning more about the history and culture,  sailing in a traditional dhow boat, snorkelling, or simply lazing on the beach, it’s the perfect laidback ending to your African holiday.

Jen and Scott’s Impromptu Proposal in Africa

Here at Rhino Africa, we absolutely LOVE hearing our traveller’s tales about their trips to Africa. And in the spirit of the month of love, one story really stands out. Here is the heartwarming tale of an impromptu proposal in Africa.

Proposal at sunset

Africa is a romantic rendezvous surrounded by Mother Nature

It Started with a Wedding

“The trip was originally to go to a wedding. Jen did her gap year in Botswana, and one of her housemates stayed on and was getting married. Thus Brycewana 2016 was born!” – Leslie Bryce.

Get ready to hear a tale of wild wanderlust and unexpected family undertakings…

Once upon a time, a band of intrepid explorers (aka the Bryce family) set off for Botswana, or as they called it, “Brycewana 2016” – an epic escapade with a seriously snazzy name.

The gang’s main mission? To attend a wedding, but that was just the tip of the iceberg. Among the merry travellers were the dynamic duo (and cutest couple), Jen and Scott, who brought their A-game to the adventure.

But wait, there’s more! Jen’s father, Richard, hailed from Zimbabwe, so the gang kicked off their journey in Zimbabwe and Zambia, taking in the stunning scenery of Victoria Falls!

Victoria Falls

So there they were, a clan of eight, soaking up the majestic sights of Victoria Falls – that wonder of wonders, UNESCO World Heritage Site, and all-around jaw-dropper. And boy, oh boy, there’s no shortage of shenanigans to be had here!

For the thrill-seekers among us, there’s Devil’s Pool – a heart-racing swim on the brink of the Falls – as well as bungee jumping, zip-lining, and micro lighting. But if you’re after something a little less wild, fear not! The region also offers sunset cruises, marvellous walking tours, and so much more.

Once our favourite family had their fill of wonder and waterfalls, the real magic materialised when making their way into the untamed wilderness of Botswana. With a little help from Rhino Africa’s travel gurus, it was a trip like no other; full of laughter, life-changing moments, and a whole lot of love!

Botswana

From lunar-like desert landscapes and open grasslands to riverine forests and papyrus-lined canals, Botswana delivers the very best in land and water safari experiences.

There are some seriously stunning spots to explore – like the Chobe National Park and the Makgadikgadi Pans – but nothing quite beats the fame (and fabulousness) of the Okavango Delta. It was an absolute no-brainer for the Bryce squad of eight to set up camp there.

Nxabega Okavango Tented Camp

“The guides were all fantastic, food was superb, and accommodation was great.” – Leslie Bryce.

The fam’s first hideaway haven was none other than Nxabega Okavango Tented Camp – known for its elegant tented suites and sweeping vistas of the surrounding Okavango Delta.

Packed with prime wildlife and bird-watching hotspots, Nxabega had all the makings of a close-up African safari encounter. And with plenty of privacy, the lovebirds, Jen and Scott, could easily cosy up and connect as a couple.

Little Machaba Camp

The family’s second sanctuary of solitude was that of Little Machaba Camp. This gem, nestled in the nooks of the Okavango Delta’s northeastern realm, is beyond compare – serving major retro vibes with its top-of-the-line living quarters that take you back to the 1950s safari era.

But the best part about this spot? You don’t even have to step outside your tent to catch sight of majestic creatures prowling the vast floodplains. Talk about spellbinding! And it’s perfect for intimate celebrations, too. So perfect that Scott got down on one knee and popped the question to Jen in this dreamy, fairytale setting.

She Said Yes!

“We’d certainly use Rhino Africa again on future trips to Africa – our daughter got engaged on this trip, so maybe a wedding sometime soon!” – Leslie Bryce.

We are over the moon that Jen said yes to Scott’s proposal in such an enchanting setting. We wish you all the happiness in the world and hope you’ll return to Africa one day to celebrate where your love story began – we promise to make it just as special as Brycewana 2016!

Top 5 Destinations for African Safari and Culture Tours

There are plenty of pairings to enjoy on our continent, but one of our favourites are African safari and culture tours. As the world’s second-largest continent, Africa is massive, measuring around 11,724,000 square miles (30,365,000 square km). Furthermore, you’d be surprised by how much diversity there is throughout Africa, not only when it comes to landscapes but wildlife and cultural diversity too. As the World’s Best Safari Company, we’ve shared the multifaceted joys of our home continent with over 180,000 delighted guests. Here are our top destinations featuring sensational safaris and captivating cultures.

1. Big 5 Safaris in Zululand, South Africa

South Africa is often referred to as “a world in one country” due to its baffling diversity of all things. It’s also revered for its Big 5 safaris. Kruger National Park is, without a doubt, the most popular safari destination here, and rightly so. However, we personally love the duo of safari and culture that KwaZulu-Natal provides and often recommend this for guests who love both wildlife and culture.

A verdant terrain with dramatic mountain ranges and sub-tropical beaches licked by warm Indian Ocean waves, it’s the dream holiday destination not only for adrenaline junkies but also for those looking for a chance to kick back and relax. The province is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, namely the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park and iSimangaliso Wetland Park. The former is where you’ll find Africa’s highest mountain range and plenty of ancient San paintings that give you a glimpse into the past.

Coastline Safaris

There are many game reserves for you to choose from, most notably Phinda Private Game Reserve and Hluhluwe-iMfolozi National Park. Phinda has seven distinct habitats,  which is why it’s often referred to as the “Seven Worlds of Wonder”, with an abundance of wildlife, including the Big 5 and over 380 bird species. On the other hand, Hluhluwe is best known for being the oldest nature reserve in South Africa, with the largest population of white rhinos on earth and celebrated for its many conservation efforts.

Because of its Indian Ocean coastline, it’s the perfect destination to add an ocean safari, as places like Sodwana Bay’s reefs have over 1,200 species of fish, as well as dolphins, flat-mouthed sharks, humpback whales, sea turtles and more to admire underwater.

Zestful Zululand

As the largest ethnic group in South Africa, the Zulu culture is fascinatingly rich with colourful attire, customs and more. A cultural excursion to their traditional homesteads will open your eyes to their way of living, from sampling their cuisine, listening to their music, and learning more about their history and customs.

2. Desert Safaris in Himbaland, Namibia

Namibia is one of our most requested destinations because it’s so unique in every way. Not only is it a land of contrasts where the ocean meets desert and wildlife seems to thrive even under the harshest conditions, but the local Himba culture is also enlightening. Double the size of Germany, Namibia might be big, but it’s sparsely populated, giving you plenty of untouched landscapes to marvel at and capture unbelievable photographs.

Desert-Adapted Wildlife Safaris

Namibia has plenty of safari destinations, of which Etosha National Park is the most famous. Home to four of the Big 5 (excluding the buffalo), as well as animals like cheetah, giraffe, two types of zebra, hyena, springbok and many more, it’s an excellent safari destination. Then there’s also Damaraland, where you can witness first-hand how the wildlife has not only managed to adapt to but thrive in the challenging desert environment.

Himba Homeland

Namibia has many fascinating cultures, one of which is the Himba. The first of their ancestors can be traced back to the early 16th century, and today you’ll find them in the northwest corner of the country, the Kunene Region. If you’ve seen images of this tribe’s women, you’ve likely noticed the red ochre cream they cover their bodies and hair with. Once they reach puberty, the women also wear a crown crafted from cow or goat leather. They have many other interesting customs you can experience and learn more about first-hand during your visit to Namibia.

3. Water Safaris and Ancient San Tribes, Botswana

The largest inland delta in the world, the Okavango Delta in Botswana is world-famous for its puzzling flooding during the dry winter months and for being a gathering place for an unbelievable diversity of species. A mirage-inducing oasis found in the otherwise arid Kalahari, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to the Big 5 and many other (endangered) species.

Mokoro Safaris

Besides your usual game drives and bush walks, you can experience a mokoro safari while visiting the Okavango Delta. A mokoro is reminiscent of the gondola in Venice, a dugout canoe that gives you the best perspective of the wildlife coming to drink and play in the water channels. It’s also silent – no engines detracting from the safari sounds.

Other than the Big 5, you can look forward to seeing hippo, Nile crocodile, cheetah, plenty of different antelope, zebra, the endangered black and white rhino, African wild dog, and many more. There are over 500 different species of birds to admire too. But it’s not only about the birds and beasts, as flora and fauna are also out of this world, with the Okavango Delta having one of the most complex ecosystems globally.

Meet One of the Oldest Cultures on Earth

The hunter-gatherer San culture, also called Bushmen, is listed among the oldest cultures in the world. Sometimes referred to as “living fossils”, they’re admired in particular for their rock art paintings and impressive hunting and survival skills. Botswana has the highest density of San people compared to the rest of Southern Africa. During your stay in Botswana, you can go on cultural tours where you spend some time with San people to learn more about their way of life.

4. Great Migration and Maasai Tribes, Kenya

The Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya, East Africa, is an extraordinary destination, not only because it’s host to part of the annual Great Wildebeest Migration and home to an impressive volume and variety of wildlife, but it’s also where you can meet the Maasai people known for their vibrant attire and fascinating customs.

Africa’s Greatest Show

The Great Migration is one of the main reasons our guests want to visit East Africa, and it’s entirely understandable! This spectacle is one of our personal favourites and still takes our breath away even after seeing it many, many times. It’s a natural phenomenon when about two million wildebeest, accompanied by zebras and other antelope, take on a pilgrimage through Kenya and Tanzania in search of food. Of course, this attracts plenty of attention from hungry predators – from lions to crocodiles, and the wildlife must fight for survival, promising drama-filled safari scenes. One of our preferred ways to watch this show unfold is from the sky on a hot air balloon safari.

Meeting the Maasai

The Maasai culture is easily identifiable by the bright sheets wrapped around their bodies, most commonly red. They also have unique beadwork jewellery that you can buy from them. What they wear has meaning and indicates social status, for example, whether they’re married or not. They are also known for their music and dancing, most notably their traditional jumping dance. During your time in Kenya, you can go on cultural visits to their villages and even partake in unique activities such as running with Maasai through the wilderness.

5. Tantalising Tanzania and Zanzibar, East Africa

Tanzania is known for also being host to the Great Migration and is home to the highest mountain in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro, and some of the largest lakes in the world. It’s also one of our top destinations to recommend to guests if they want to combine a bush and beach holiday, as lounging on the Zanzibar coastline is the perfect ending to an adventure-filled safari.

Ancient Volcanic Crater Filled with Wildlife

As the only intact caldera in the world, the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania is a conservation area and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s filled to the brim with wildlife, from the Big 5 to more than approximately 6,000 wildebeest, a wide range of fauna and flora, and bird species.

Spice Island Tours

Made up of three main islands in the Indian Ocean, the Zanzibar Archipelago is located off the coast of Tanzania. It used to be an essential stop on the spice trade, whereafter Arab sultans claimed it and settled in with the local Swahili culture. As a result, you have an interesting mix of Indo-Arabian architecture, delicious cuisine, arts and crafts, and more. The cultural and historical capital, Stone Town, is the birthplace of famous singer Freddie Mercury and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
